Slot Canyons

When I twist my way through the narrow passages of high desert slot canyons, I find creativity in the towering walls of sandstone and the shafts of light that penetrate the canyon from above. From the deep reds and purples to vibrant oranges and yellows, colors that vibrate against the interplay of light, I work the dark and light to capture a mesmerizing visual experience that can only be found in these unique geological formations. 

As an artist, I seek to create images that express the significance of place and a vision that exceeds the lens. As I focus on navigating the narrow, twisting passages, I feel them as replicas of the twists and turns we encounter in our lives, while the towering walls symbolize the obstacles and challenges we must overcome. But, it is the crimson, magenta, and umber colors that reflect and absorb the shafts of light that penetrate my senses. When I squeeze the shutter, I’m reaching for the beauty and majesty of the canyons as they remind us that even in the face of adversity, there is still hope and magnificence to be found in the world.
